The Diamante was Mitsubishi's answer to the Bentley Cornische II and the Ferrari TR512. The car failed to make much headway due the repeated delays of the VR-4 model. As everyone knows Diamante is Esperanto for sapphire.

The Diamante was the Buick of Japanese cars, if Buick actually made a good car. It was a Mitsubishi, but the leather was soft and the V6 engine was torquey and smooth. The traction control with YAW was pretty fancy for the early 2000s, and it had self-leveling headlights and frameless windows. If you wanted a nice-ass car for not a lot of money the Diamante was it.

At the risk of having missed the joke entirely, Diamante is Portuguese/Spanish for Diamond.

Every one of these I see still moving under its own power is belching blue smoke. Of course, that does seem to be what all old Mitsubishis do...

They never held their value well - my parents paid just over $30k for a loaded 2001 LS model and by 2009 they were worth very little. Today you can get a clean one with just over 100k miles for around $2-3k. Because they're worth so little most people buy them and drive them into the ground.

My step mom had one for a while in the mid-late 90s and had a terrible experience with it. Shit fell off the dash and she had lots of repairs... including the smoke issue fhrblig mentioned.

Ya - Problem with the Mitsus with long-lasting life:
The Interior bits and pieces self destroy if the car is not garaged at all times - A beat up Mitsu really looks like shit. No plastic/leather was designed to last over 50K miles
The V6 Emissions system is crap after a few years (I changed the Cat converter twice, and it never passed Smog at first pass on the 3000GT for 8 years!)
The 2nd Gen in the pic was at least still a competitor in the Lux car segment, the 3rd gen looks like warmed-over Galant and is the worst of them all.

Seems to be the same with the Mazda Millenia. They haven't been treated well.

Ah yes, the Diamante. The car that existed so that you could argue with your friends over whether the Sentinel in Grand Theft Auto III was supposed to be this or the Lincoln LS.
It was an LS.

They were nice cars back when new. Whenever it was lunch time at the Mits dealer I worked at in 2001-2003, I'd always grab a Dynamite to take to the drive thru, or the bank.

it's a Verada , made in Adelaide Australia by Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL)
these finished in 2005 , the following 380 failed dismally , nice car though. (think Galant)
as a result MMAL ceased production March 2008.
:(
and they've just opened a university campus on the old factory site.
